Knives are Out
The big guns in the Socialist party here in France are warming up for the battle ahead of an election to choose a new leader even though still more than six months.
Segolene Royal officially announced his intention to run last Friday. Y Now the man many consider to be his main opponent, Bertrand Delanoë, has published a book "De l'audace" in which he outlined his vision for the future of the party and also points to Royal.
When he announced his intention to stand, the old guard of the party or so-called "elephants" – Many of whom have been at the forefront for a very long time and openly support Delanoë – were quick to criticize, saying that Royal move would only further serve to divide an already divided party and that she had declared early.
They also accused her of ignoring the rules of the game – although she was neither the first nor the only announced his candidacy – and prematurely causing a probable (media) confrontation with Delanoë. In fact the timing was likely to help take the sting out of the book's publication Delanoë.
And in a sense the release of "De l'audace" is a very tricky move by Delanoë, who won reelection in March for a second term as mayor of Paris.
He has not yet declared officially as a candidate to lead the party, although everyone expects him to his feet. However so far has enabled many of the elephants "to do his will, and especially his mentor and main promoter, the former prime minister, Lionel Jospin.
While recognizing that the Socialist Party has been in something of a general malaise for several years, Delanoë insists (in his book) that the party would not do any favors in the election of Royal as its candidate in presidential elections last year.
Delanoë In leveling these criticisms are strongly aligned with that many (including Royal) said that they were responsible for the decline in the fortunes of the Party Socialist.
Delanoë accuse her of having a campaign without direction and firmly rejected any alliance with the modem, the centrist party. Any person, including unfamiliar with the French political words are recognized as echoing the Jospin in his book, Real attacked last year.
In terms policy perhaps the most striking element Delanoë book is its call for the Socialist Party to embrace economic liberalism and to accept the principle of competition – long a taboo for many on the left. In fact Delanoë proudly claims to be a "liberal" itself in the true sense of the word humanitarian, of course, and insists it has long been a principle of abuse and bad for the center-right.
The launch of the book, then, in effect, only the most recent offensive in a campaign, giving national exposure Delanoë without him to take the plunge and officially declared that the battle management for either November for the leadership of the party or ticket which is more important as its candidate in 2012 presidential race.
For its part, Royal has admitted mistakes in presidential elections last year and said it was not helped by the lack of real support he received from "the elephants in the game." She believes in realignment the party with the center and the more populist "listen and hear" approach to politics. Also has made it clear that her party leader also should be the presidential candidate of 2012.
Other important differences between the two Socialist pretenders to the "throne" will become clearer a Once both have been officially declared.
For the moment, but the knives are out and all of the current owner, former Royal's partner, François Hollande, you can do is watch from the sidelines and keep my fingers crossed that the two do not go from one to another jugular over the coming months.
A public demonstration of the struggles internal is the last thing the party can afford, especially after it has been weakened by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who successfully poached a number of high-profile members and supporters of his government of "unity" of last year.
