Fortunately, advances in vehicle-networking standards are addressing these issues with the wide adoption of Controller Area Network (CAN) and Local Interconnect Network (LIN) architecture. These network standards are providing a balance between performance and cost optimization across automotive systems. CAN provides a high-speed network for chassis, powertrain and body-backbone communications, while LIN answers the need for a simple network for sensor and actuator subsystems that reduces cost and improves robustness through standardization. Together, the vehicle networking standards and advanced mixed-signal processes provide an opportunity for automotive manufacturers to introduce affordable new electronic systems as well as reduce costs. They also improve maintenance and reliability while providing advanced convenience and safety features, like collision avoidance.

The widespread adoption of CAN and LIN standards is an important development for automotive electronics and becomes much more significant in conjunction with recent advances in mixed-signal semiconductor processes.

Adopting standardized vehicle-networking architectures and using more highly integrated mixed-signal ICs bring several advantages at the system level. The first is an improvement in a system’s robustness and diagnostics. By adopting standardized networks for two-way communication, diagnostic and failure information can be obtained when there are issues with the system.

The second is a reduction in wiring requirements. Using standardized vehicle-networking architectures, it is possible to build a feature- and diagnostic-rich system that requires only three wires. Reduced wiring requirements have less cost, less weight, will be easier to install at the factory, and will help reduce the potential for failure.

Integration also leads to other advantages and savings. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and housings can be smaller, allowing for improved and more flexible placement in the vehicle, with less concern about where and how to run the wires. Through the use of fewer components, there are fewer items to keep in inventory, qualify and monitor. Some of these factors also lead to a reduction in weight and space consumption, factors that are always important in vehicle design.

This advance is another step in increasing the intelligence and capabilities of automotive systems. We’re already witnessing this increased intelligence and capability with complex navigation systems, Internet access, passenger entertainment, ABS brakes, engine management systems and advanced stability control. The next generation of mixed-signal automotive integrated circuits (ICs) will integrate even more performance and processing power. It will provide programmable features and added flexibility that will be used to address the automotive electronic system needs of tomorrow. As these systems become more advanced, the possibilities are limited only by the applications that vehicle designers can imagine and that the end customer is willing to purchase.

Radiator Fluid/coolant: Monthly Automotive Maintenance Part 2

In this second edition of automotive maintenance tips, we’re going to be dealing again with fluids. Who would have imagined all the liquid that a car consumes, besides gasoline? Well, other than mechanics and people who find cars fascinating in anyway.

In the previous article of this series, we learned about oil and brake fluid. Next on our list of must know maintenance pointers, will be radiator coolant. Your operator handbook, or owner’s manual will tell you if, and what type of radiator coolant is best for your car.

Radiator Coolant

This fluid is extremely crucial to your car, as it is what prevents the engine from overheating. Allowing the coolant level to get too low, can cause severe damage to your cars engine, leading to repeated breakdowns and costly repairs.

Adding coolant to the radiator.

If your car is pre-1970, then you will have to add the coolant straight into the radiator. Some of the newer model German and Swedish luxury or sports cars also require the coolant be added directly to the radiator.

1.    Park your automobile on a level part of your driveway.

2.    Allow your engine to cool down for about a half hour before you proceed.

3.    The radiator cap should be located at the front of the engine, near the middle.

4.    Be very careful when you remove the radiator cap, touching it when the engine is hot, could result in severe burns.

5.    Once you have twisted off the cap (use rags or a thick glove), look into the radiator, and determine if the fluid level is pretty close to the top. If it isn’t, then pour in the coolant until you can see the fluid easily.

6.    Make sure that when you twist the radiator cap back on, you have it screwed on tightly.

Most American and foreign cars that are available today, have a plastic cistern, or container that holds the radiator coolant.

1.    The plastic coolant container will most likely be located close to the radiator. In some cars, it is even labeled. There will be a rubber or plastic hose leading from the radiator to the container.

2.    Again, ensure that the engine is not hot when you remove the cap. If the fluid level is lower than the “full line”, add coolant until it reaches that line.

3.    Do not try to remove the cap if the car has overheated, the reservoir holding the coolant could have become pressurized, and cause any remaining fluid to spray out at you when you twist off the cap. Allow the engine to cool sufficiently.

4.    If your car overheats because of low coolant, DO NOT put in straight water, as this can cause further damage. Radiator coolant is half anti-freeze and half-purified water. It is a good idea, to keep a bottle of coolant in your trunk, for situations such as this.

Radiator fluid comes in attractive bottles, and has a somewhat sweet taste. Always keep it out of the reach of children. And if it should spill, clean it up immediately because pets, like kids, only understand that it tastes good, not that it is poisonous.

During the times between regular tune-ups, you need to make sure that all of your hoses and belts are in good condition, and are securely connected to the parts of your engine that they need to be connected to.

Accidents and breakdowns can occur if a hose is leaking a vital fluid, or comes loose and also if a belt that powers an engine part snaps or slips off. Checking to make sure that none of these things are likely to happen is an easy task, and one that could save you from being stranded somewhere or least save you some money on repairs.

How to check your hoses

1.    Open up the hood, while the engine is off, and cold. Never try to touch any hose in your engine while the engine is running or hot, you could easily be burned.

2.    Not all cars have the same number of hoses, or use hoses for the same parts. But every car will have at least three, the upper radiator hose, the lower radiator hose, and the heater hose, these are the coolant hoses.

3.    These hose provide a flow conduit between the engine and the heating block, and the radiator and the engine.

4.    Visually scrutinize each hose for any noticeable cracks, rips, and loose connections.

5.    Squeeze each hose, if the hose feels spongy, brittle, or lumpy, the hose needs to be replaced.

6.    If any of the hoses are coming disconnected, tighten the clamp or the connector. You can tell if they are loose by pulling lightly on the ends, or if you can see that the hose is wet or leaking, where it is attached.

There are various belts for different parts of your engine, not all cars will need the same type, for the same component. Knowing what types of belts are in your engine will help you know where and what to look for when performing this maintenance check.

Timing belt/Gilmer belt/Camshaft belt

•    A notched rubber belt that allows the crankshaft to turn the camshaft. If the timing belt snaps or slips, your engine will stop working completely. A damaged or stripped timing belt causes a great deal of costly repair work.



Serpentine belts/Drive belts


•    These belts provide the power to the power steering pump, the air conditioning compressor pump, the air injection pump, the cooling fan, the clutch, the brakes, and other engine parts as well, depending on the make and model of vehicle. Any engine part that uses a belt will stop functioning if its belt slips or breaks



To check the condition of your belts.


1.    While the engine is off, and cool, do a visual and a touch test to check the condition of the belts. Trying to check a belt while the engine is running could cost you a finger or your entire hand.

2.    Look carefully at all of the belts that you can see, check for any sign of stripping, cracking, fraying, and slipping.

3.    To check the tension of the belts, refer to your owner’s manual, in most cases, no belt should have a give of over an inch. Pull or push lightly on the belt to judge the amount of give.

4.    Any belt that feels spongy, fragile, or brittle should be replaced.
